James Appleton, host of The 46 of 46 Podcast comes on for his second Trail Tales episode. We spent most of this episode talking about the 'overuse' issue in the Adirondack High Peaks....although calling it such is a massive simplification. James lives in the Adirondack Park, and thus has some unique and valuable views on the subject. Even if you do not hike in the Adirondacks, I think there is a lot to learn in this episode, especially as public hiking trails have started to see an increase in traffic over the years.

Sophia Garber joins the podcast to tell the story of her 2020 Northville Placid Trail thru hike in the Adirondacks. She hiked it very shortly after Flossy and I did, and despite the similar time-frame... her hike sounded way more fun! So if you thought my NPT story was kind of a downer, give Sophia's a listen and hopefully you will get a different perspective on the trail! Flossy and I successfully completed the Northville Placid Trail in the Adirondacks. This was my second attempt at thru hiking this trail so I finally got my redemption. However... it wasn't easy. It was the hardest hike that we have attempted since the Appalachian Trail in 2018. Tune in to find out what happened. Go watch the video of our hike: https://youtu.be/ccrxEfSuYXg

Flossy joins me once again to discuss the backpacking and hiking we have done since our last episode (episode 89), as well as our hiking plans for the future. We are going to be attempting to thru hike the Northville Placid Trail in the Adirondacks... we talk about what we are excited for, the build up to the hike, and what we are nervous for.

Thru-Hiking the Northville Placid Trail in the Adirondacks with Jacob Ireland
Jacob Ireland recently completed a thru-hike of the Northville Placid Trail in the Adirondacks, and was kind enough to reflect on his experience with me this week. I also attempted the Northville Placid Trail a few years ago, and through that experience I discovered how tough of a trail the NPT really is. Though Jacob certainly does not regret his experience on the Northville Placid Trail, he expressed his mixed feelings about it on this episode. We talk about why he felt a bit underwhelmed by the trail, and also cover the positive aspects of the Northville Placid Trail (lakes, lakes, and more lakes)! It's always a treat to talk about the Adirondacks.

46 Climbs co-founder Kolby Ziemendorf is back on the show to talk about his recent attempt to break the record for hiking the most High Peaks in the Adirondacks in 24 hours. Unfortunately, the attempt did not work out, and we talk all about what happened. We also cover some of his preparation for taking on such a daunting hiking challenge, the record fund-raising year that 46 Climbs is having, and we even touch on how he will be thru-hiking the Northville-Placid Trail in just a few weeks. Kolby has hiked all 46 of the Adirondack High Peaks, and has intimate knowledge of the Adirondacks. It's always a pleasure to chat with him, and I am sure he will come back on in the future!

Nick Scaramuzzo is a seasoned Northeast hiker, having peak-bagged in Vermont, the Adirondacks, and the Catskills, just to name a few places. In our chat we discuss the Catskills 3500-footer club and how the "rules" of the hiking list vary slightly from the more popular Adirondack 46 and White Mountain 48. We also talk about his upcoming thru-hike of the John Muir Trail, and some of his preparation for that, including how he navigated the tricky permit system in order to make his hike happen.

Alton Eckel and her dog Cole have been ripping miles in the White Mountains and elsewhere for nearly 10 years now. We jump all over the place in this week's episode, talking about her thru-hike of the Cohos Trail in New Hampshire, how amazing of a hiking partner her dog Cole is, and how the pair were the first to complete the Northeast Ultra 8. That is just the tip of the iceberg however; tune in to hear about everything else we discussed!

Shawn Crawford, known as Sintax77 on YouTube, began sharing his backpacking and hiking adventures with the world in 2011, and hasn't looked back since. He has created one of the most successful backpacking channels on the internet, and continues to release high quality documentations of his journey's in the backcountry.
We jump around a ton in this episode, covering topics such as the White Mountains (and how they shape up against the Adirondacks), winter hiking/camping, and how Shawn's philosophy has changed over the years concerning ultralight backpacking.
