Tristen Steele thru hiked all over the country this year, completing large sections of the Pacific Crest Trail and Oregon Coast Trail, as well as a yo-yo hike of the Ouachita Trail. This is all impressive as it is, but even more so since he is only 18 years old! And of course... he's a huge goofball, in the best way possible.

AT thru hiker Luke McKay edited my Pacific Crest Trail videos this summer, and he joins the show to talk about how the hell we pulled it off, plus we talk a lot about the Appalachian Trail, embarrassing moments on trail, and much more. We recorded this episode in September, before I had re-started the show, so this was actually the first episode I had done since August of 2021.

Emory Wanger, who hosts the Byland Podcast, joins the show this week to talk about thru hiking the PCT, backpack-hunting, and of course... podcasting! Jake Pickering thru-hiked the Pacific Crest Trail in 2016, and headed back into the woods again in 2018. The second time around he thru-hiked the Great Divide Trail in Western Canada, which is a relatively unknown trail compared to more popular hikes like the Appalachian Trail and PCT. In this episode we learn about how a Wikipedia article exposed him to the world of long-distance hiking, and all about the logistics of hiking the Great Divide Trail. Make sure you stay tuned until the end of the episode to hear his crazy story about being evacuated from the GDT by helicopter, a good reminder for everyone to renew their SPOT subscriptions!

Effie Drew joins Trail Tales to talk about two main topics: her thru-paddle (you read that correctly) of the Northern Forest Canoe Trail, and hiking with dogs! She has done the Appalachian Trail, the Continental Divide Trail, and much of the Pacific Crest Trail, and in 2018 her partner and her decided to give their legs a quick break and take to the water. They paddled the entire 740-mile Northern Forest Canoe Trail at the end of 2018.
Towards the end of the episode, I get the chance to pick Effie's brain on the subject of backpacking and hiking with dogs. Her dog Luna has hiked over 7,000 miles which is insanity, so she is able to give plenty of advice on how to manage your dog on the trail.
